Do you remember how I said I'd clean the bedroom today? Remember? Well, I'm sorry. I've encountered a road block.
I tried reasoning with him...explaining that I need to strip the bed so that I can make it up again with fresh sheets.
Sigh. I guess I'll just have to go and read a book or something until he's ready to cede the bed back to me.
C'est la vie.
As in Two Hundred and Forty-Seven (not 24/7).
There are things that I know I just shouldn't watch.
And yet...it is like a train-wreck. I can't change the channel because I Must See What Happens Next.
Animal Planet's Animal Cops = Bad Idea
I always get angry...or het up...watching this show. I don't tune in too often, but I did tonight. What was I thinking!?!
The two hundred and forty-seven figure is the number of cats that were found and removed from the home of a cat collector. The guy took in a stray female who was pregnant. She gave birth to nine kittens and the ultimate result was 247 cats stuck in a filthy house (unspeakably so), more feral than not.
It breaks my heart to know that there isn't anything that can be done for those cats. Feral cats do not become tame, the humane society does not have the funds or facilties to house the cats indefinitely. Those poor cats have a death sentence due to human...well...to be compassionate I suppose I need to call it "mental illness".
Since I have a hard time killing insects (was I a Budhist in a previous life?), the thought of the mass deaths that need to happen hurts.
Crap.
They've just moved on to a story about dogs used in dog fights. The dogs were seized from the home of a 17 year-old boy who, with his friends stage those fights. Grrrrrr! I need to go grocery shopping...at least it'll get me away from the temptation of watching more episodes.
I rock. Truly, I do. I am the rockin'-est person I know today (that could change tomorrow, but today...I'm the absolute bestest.)
Why, you may ask, am I tooting my own horn? Well, I'll tell you.
A little over a year ago, I found myself in a position where I had some time on my hands and a desire to find a hobby. I'm not one for video games, and I don't feel like I can turn to baking because 1) the husband is allergic to chocolate and 2) he and I are truly trying to watch our weight (ideally, we'd like to watch it decrease rather than the long-standing trend of watching it increase). We are apartment dwellers, so I have no garden. I could grow plants inside, but I have plant-eating/vomitting cats. I have to clean up enough hairballs as it is. I have no plans to encourage reguritation of any kind.
So, I turned to textiles. I crochet. In theory, I can knit, but it takes too much thought. I sew.
Now, because of who I am, how I was raised, and all of that, I can't stand to make things that are simply decorative. I like my creations to have a purpose. Curtains - sure they're decorative, but they also give us more privacy and block out the sun when we are trying to sleep in. See: useful.
So, rather than begin making things that are simply pretty to look at, I found a website for Charitable Sewing.
From the rather lengthy list of links, I then found a website for the Snuggles Project.
The Snuggles Project, in brief, is a website that gives ideas for how to make soft pads for animals who are living in shelters. There is also a list, as you navigate the site, to participating shelters - shelters who will accept these handmade items. The project is hardly organized - no one keeps track of how many snuggles are donated, but there is the website, a quarterly newsletter, and a request for monetary donations to keep costs down.
So, I took some time to make up some snuggles and I donated them to the Harmony House for Cats - a no-kill shelter from which I adopted my two cats.
I did all of this several months ago. It was today in mail, though, that I received a sweet thank-you letter and (even better) photo evidence of the snuggles being used by the kittehs.
Look at those kittehs! They make me so happy. It's such a small thing, and I didn't do much at all, but these kittehs make me feel like a million bucks.
I'm glad I no longer live in Chicago. I'd be tempted to stop by Harmony House and pick up that handsome black kitty. Look at him just lying there. Such a sweet-looking guy!
